SENIORS MEDAL No. 4 – Competition Report

Played Thursday 23rd July 2026 

A warm July morning greeted 36 Seniors for Medal No. 4 — a day of steady scoring, tight finishes, and the usual mixture of optimism, disbelief, and selective amnesia regarding certain holes. With prize money divided pro‑rata, both divisions produced close contests and a few raised eyebrows.

🏆 Division 1 – A Four‑Way Scrap Worth Watching

Division 1 delivered one of the tightest finishes of the season, with the top four separated by just two shots. The back‑nine countback was busier than the clubhouse coffee machine.

• 1st – Graham Pretty Nett 69 (Back 9: 35) – £18 A composed round from Graham, who kept the ball in play, the nerves under control, and the Treasurer happy.

• 2nd – Mark Brook Nett 69 (Back 9: 36) – £16 Mark matched the winning score but lost out by a single shot on the back nine. Still, a cracking medal round.

• 3rd – Steve Wilson Nett 71 (Back 3: 11) – £14 Steve’s finish was strong enough to win the countback for third — proof that sometimes the final three holes do matter.

• 4th – Derek Robbins Nett 71 (Back 3: 13) – £12 Derek was edged out of third by two shots on the last three holes, but still produced a tidy medal round worthy of applause.

21 players competed in Division 1.

🏆 Division 2 – Steady Scoring and a Clear Winner

Division 2 produced another close contest, with three solid medal rounds taking the prizes.

• 1st – Anil Patani Nett 71 – £18 A calm, controlled round from Anil, who kept mistakes to a minimum and the scoring steady.

• 2nd – Terry Unwin Nett 72 – £16 Terry’s dependable medal golf earned him second place — a round described by playing partners as “quietly efficient.”

• 3rd – Peter Bowler Nett 74 – £14 Peter secured third with a solid performance, keeping the ball moving forward and the card respectable.

15 players competed in Division 2.

📌 Closing Notes

The Seniors march on to the next fixture with optimism, determination, and at least one player insisting they’ve “finally sorted their swing.”

Thursday 16th July 2026

Division 1 – Harrison Hits the High Notes

Top marks in Division 1 go to Phil Harrison, who produced an excellent 40 points to take the win. A round full of steady scoring and just enough sparkle to keep everyone else firmly in the rear‑view mirror. Rumours that he floated serenely down the 18th fairway remain unconfirmed.

Two points back was Drew Armstrong, returning a strong 38 points and continuing his run of form that suggests he may be quietly assembling a highlight reel for the end‑of‑season dinner.

Third place went to Graham Pretty, who posted 37 points and secured the position with a sharp back nine of 19 — a finish that will no doubt be mentioned with a modest shrug and a satisfied grin.

Also on 37 points was Stu Newland, edged out on countback with a back nine of 18, but still very much in the prizes and proving once again that he is never far from the action.

Division 2 – Giles Goes Big

Division 2 produced the day’s standout score, with Kevin Giles storming home on 41 points — the sort of total that makes the rest of the division briefly consider taking up gardening instead.

Behind him came a tightly packed trio all on 37 points, separated only by the countback calculator:

• Ed Easton claimed second place with a back six of 13,

• Chris. Young took third with a back three of 8,

• Andy Love completed the prize list with a back three of 5.

A close‑run contest and proof that Division 2 remains a lively and unpredictable battleground.

SENIORS CAPTAIN’S DAY – COMPETITION REPORT

Captain’s Day arrived with glorious sunshine and temperatures that would have made a Mediterranean beach bar proud. As the day wore on and the thermometer nudged past 33°C, the Seniors Section began to resemble a slow‑moving convoy of safari explorers: hats pulled tight, suncream applied with decorator‑level enthusiasm, and water bottles clutched like precious artefacts.

Golf trolleys, normally obedient creatures, started showing signs of independent thought. Many were spotted hugging the shade of the trees, clearly deciding that the fairway was far too exposed. Some golfers insisted this was tactical course management. Others admitted it was simply where their drives had finished. A few claimed their balls were beginning to soften in the heat.

But while many Seniors were gently roasting, a handful of pairs produced golf of genuine distinction. At the very top of the leaderboard stood Drew Armstrong and Dave Bull, who rose above the shimmering fairways and delivered a superb 45‑point better‑ball Stableford. This wasn’t just a good score — it was a performance worthy of the Captain’s Tray, one of the Seniors Section’s major honours‑board trophies. Their names will now be engraved for posterity, admired for years to come, and pointed at by future Seniors who will claim, “I could have won that… if it hadn’t been so hot.”

Second place went to Phil Hudson & Ade Firth, whose 43 points and excellent 24‑point back nine showed they were made of stern stuff. Steve D’Arcy & Lance Rosie also carded 43 points, their 23‑point back nine securing third place. In fourth, Tony Gilbert & Mike Gilbert posted a solid 41 points, proving that family harmony can survive even in extreme heat — a remarkable achievement in itself.

A huge thank you to everyone who played, perspired, and persevered. Your support for Seniors competitions and inter‑club matches this year has been outstanding. Long may it continue — ideally at temperatures where golf balls don’t feel warm to the touch.

Crewcock & Bryah Take the Title

A hearty round of applause to Richard Crewcock & Steve Bryah, who claimed top honours with a well‑crafted 37 points, sealing victory courtesy of a superb back nine of 20. It was the sort of finish that suggests they either found their rhythm… or finally agreed on who was supposed to hit the ball next.

Their strong inward half proved decisive in a tight contest, nudging them ahead of the chasing pack and earning them £18 each — a tidy return for a morning’s work.

Beale & Milburn Close Behind

Just missing out on top spot were Marcus Beale & Peter Milburn, also returning 37 points but edged out on countback with a back nine of 17. A fine performance nonetheless, and one that will no doubt be retold in the clubhouse with the phrase “if only” appearing at least twice.

D’Arcy & Bursztyn in Third

Third place went to Richard Bursztyn & Steve D’Arcy, who posted a solid 36 points. Reliable, competitive, and just one good bounce away from climbing higher — the sort of round that keeps them firmly in the mix every week.

Swan & Hopwood Complete the Prize List

Rounding out the prizes were John Swain & John Hopwood, returning 35 points and winning the countback courtesy of a sharp back six of 12. A neat finish, and enough to secure £12 each and bragging rights for at least the next 48 hours.

Division 1 – Wilson Takes Charge

A well‑earned round of applause to Steve Wilson, who claimed top spot in Division 1 with an excellent 40 points. His card included two birdies and seven pars, the sort of steady, confident scoring that makes the rest of us wonder whether he’s finally cracked the secret of this game.

He finished two points clear of Dave Bonser, who returned a strong 38 points, winning the back‑nine countback with a tidy inward half of 18. A fine effort, and no doubt he’ll be replaying one or two “if only” moments in the clubhouse.

Just behind came Lance Rosie, also on 38 points, edged out on countback with a back nine of 17 — still an excellent performance and enough to keep the Division 1 leaderboard looking suitably competitive.

Graham Pretty completed the prize list with 36 points, a solid return and proof that consistency still pays the bills.

Division 2 – Sallis by a Single Point

Over in Division 2, John Sallis took the honours with 36 points, helped along by two pars and a generally steady round that kept him just ahead of the chasing pack.

He finished one point ahead of James Shields, who posted 35 points with a back nine of 17 — a number he will almost certainly mention at least twice before leaving the car park.

Keith Evans also returned 35 points, but his back nine of 16 nudged him into third place. Kevin Giles followed closely with 34 points, rounding out a tightly bunched division where every putt seemed to matter.

Seniors Men’s Medal No. 3 –Competition Cancelled (Heroism Noted)

Thursday 11th June 2026

Two brave souls ventured out early for Medal No. 3 — but, as it turned out, not early enough to dodge what can only be described as biblical weather. While the rest of the field wisely withdrew before their waterproofs achieved full saturation, our two pioneers pressed on through conditions that would have had Noah reaching for the toolbox.

They battled on in horrendous rain, sideways gusts, and the sort of visibility where you’re not entirely sure whether you’re lining up a putt or addressing a small amphibian. Their determination was admirable; their sanity remains under review.

With only two players left standing (or at least squelching), the Committee had no choice but to cancel the competition, refund the entry fees, and offer a hearty “well done” for their gallant — if slightly soggy — efforts.

Before the Deluge – A Result Worth Keeping

Prior to the weather turning the course into a shallow inland sea, Steve C. Schofield produced a fine round, going out in 47 and coming back in 49, with one par to his name. This was enough to beat Graham Pretty by two shots, and he will no doubt treasure this victory as the last recorded act of golf before the heavens opened..

Seniors Men’s Medal No. 2B – Competition Results

Thursday 4th June 2026

Division 1 – Schofield in Command

A hearty round of applause (and possibly a small bow) to Steve C. Schofield, who marched to victory with a tidy nett 70. Steve went out in 40 and came back in 44, sprinkling in two birdies and five pars — the sort of form that makes the rest of us wonder whether he’s secretly been practising.

He finished three shots clear of Marcus Beale, who returned a nett 73 and a very respectable back nine of 37, which he will no doubt mention casually in the clubhouse for the next fortnight.

Drew Armstrong also posted a nett 73, but his back nine of 39 wasn’t quite enough to sneak past Marcus. Still, a fine effort and a reminder that Division 1 remains a dangerous place for the faint‑hearted.

Division 2 – D’Arcy by a Whisker

Over in Division 2, Steve D’Arcy claimed the honours with a nett 72, going out in 43 and back in 49, including three pars and at least one moment where he wondered why he ever took up the game.

He edged out Terry Unwin by a single shot — Terry returning a nett 73 with a sharp back nine of 36, which suggests he either found his rhythm or finally located the middle of the clubface.

Peterl Bull also carded a nett 73, but his back nine of 39 nudged him into third place. Rumours that he blamed the greens, the wind, and the alignment of Jupiter remain unconfirmed.
