Information from our Seniors Section Captain at Beeston Fields Golf Club
A grand day out was had by all at the Senior Captain’s Away Day, held this year at the splendid Radcliffe on Trent Golf Club. Forty intrepid Beeston Fields seniors took on a beautifully presented course, where the greens were excellent, the welcome warm, and the fairways… well, let’s just say they offered the occasional “character‑building” bounce thanks to the dry spell.
The team event proved exceptionally tight, with the top two groups tied on 87 points and separated only by countback. Winners – 87 points (Photo 1)
Dave Bull
Andy Lowe
Julian Ennis
Phil Mawson
Runners‑up – 87 points (countback)
Anil Patani
Geoff Bryan
John Sallis
Terry Unwin
The individual Stableford scores were equally close, with six players clustered between 36 and 37 points. Countback was required to sort the finishing order, and the final standings were: (all individual winners are shown in the MUG SHOT Photo 2)
Geoff Bryan – 37 pts (19 back 9)
Dave Bull – 37 pts (18, back 6: 13)
Patrick Vaulkhard – 37 pts (18, back 6: 12)
Rob McWilliam – 37 pts (16)
Andy Lowe – 36 pts (19)
Kev Murray – 36 pts (18)
Geoff Bryan, the Club Captain, took top honours—despite producing what was diplomatically described as one of the messiest scorecards ever submitted in a BFGC competition. Naturally, we shall not mention the player who marked it… although rumours suggest a certain Terry Unwin may have been involved.
Nearest the Pin (11th): John Hopwood
Nearest the Pin (17th): Andy Beer
Card Draw: Andy Beer (awarded a mug, but no cash)
Wooden Spoon: John Simpson (also a mug, but of a different emotional flavour)
The Seniors Captain unveiled his newly designed, exclusive luxury drinking vessels—also known as coffee mugs—which were presented to the top six individuals. His pride was only slightly dented when Radcliffe’s catering team observed that the carefully edited Beeston Fields course photo printed on the mugs looked rather like a moth. Artistic interpretation, it seems, is alive and well.
In his concluding address, the Seniors Captain thanked all players for their enthusiasm, good humour, and support throughout the day. He expressed his hope that most—if not all—would still be swinging clubs in similar Beeston Fields events next year and beyond.
A cracking day, played in great spirit, with tight competition, laughter, sunshine, and just enough chaos to make it memorable.
