The Beeston Fields Seniors travelled all the way to Chilwell Manor — a gruelling 1.8 miles for some — and refused to be intimidated by the shocking sight of actual green grass on parts of the fairways, or the even more alarming discovery of real water in the ditches. Rumours that several players had to sit down and steady themselves are, of course, unconfirmed.

Despite these botanical and hydrological surprises, the team produced some superb golf. There were four excellent wins, several brave battles, and not a single appearance from any of our ex‑members — disappointing, as we were hoping at least one might pop up from behind a hedge.

The match was played in great spirit, on the superb Chilwell greens — followed by an equally superb carvery — ensured the day was enjoyed by all. The final result was a very creditable 4–4 away draw.

Match 1 – Phil Harrison & Graham Pretty W 2&1

A strong start from Captain Phil Harrison and Graham Pretty, who combined beautifully to secure a 2&1 win. Phil’s tee shots were steady and controlled, and Graham’s short game was sharp throughout. They handled the firm fairways and the occasional patch of suspiciously green turf with confidence, giving Beeston the perfect opening point.

Match 2 – Lance Rosie & Eddie Easton L 2&1

Lance Rosie and Eddie Easton fought hard but slipped to a 2&1 defeat. Lance’s accuracy kept them in the match, and Eddie used his shots cleverly, but Chilwell’s pair found just enough at the right moments. A close contest, but the point went to the home side.

Match 3 – Mike Gilbert & Pete Bull L 4&3

Mike Gilbert and Pete Bull produced some excellent golf early on, but Chilwell’s pairing proved too strong, resulting in a 4&3 loss. Pete’s putting kept them competitive, and Mike’s ball‑striking was solid, but the hosts handled the greens superbly and pulled away on the back nine.

Match 4 – Tony Gilbert & John Swan W 1 UP

A dramatic match that went all the way to the 18th. Tony Gilbert and John Swan held their nerve brilliantly to win 1 UP. Tony’s iron play was crisp, and John’s length off the tee (still under review by the Seniors Handicap Committee) proved invaluable. A superb, hard‑fought point.

Match 5 – Dave Bull & John Sallis L 1 DOWN

Dave Bull and John Sallis battled bravely but were edged out 1 DOWN. Dave’s consistency and John’s tidy short game kept them close, but Chilwell’s pair found a crucial late birdie to seal the win. A frustratingly narrow defeat.

Match 6 – Kev Murray & Julian Ennis W 5&4

One of the standout performances of the day. Kev Murray and Julian Ennis delivered a commanding 5&4 victory, overwhelming their opponents with confident tee shots, sharp approaches, and excellent putting. Kev’s steady rhythm and Julian’s calm control made this a textbook away win.

Match 7 – Drew Armstrong & Malcolm Leivers W 4&2

Another superb win came from Drew Armstrong and Malcolm Leivers, who triumphed 4&2. Drew’s putting was excellent, and Malcolm used his handicap shots perfectly, keeping constant pressure on Chilwell. A stylish, controlled performance.

Match 8 – Andy Lowe & Robert Jones L 7&5

The final match saw Andy Lowe and Robert Jones suffer a tough 7&5 defeat. Andy struck the ball well, and Robert fought hard, but Chilwell’s pair were relentless and took control early. A difficult finish, but the earlier wins ensured Beeston still earned a valuable away draw.

Final Score: Chilwell Manor 4 – 4 Beeston Fields

A very creditable away draw, built on four excellent wins and plenty of determined golf. The team adapted well to the unusual sight of green fairways and actual water hazards, and the match was played in great spirit throughout.
