A hearty round of applause to Richard Grewcock & Steve Bryah, who claimed top honours with a well‑crafted 37 points, sealing victory courtesy of a superb back nine of 20. It was the sort of finish that suggests they either found their rhythm… or finally agreed on who was supposed to hit the ball next.
Their strong inward half proved decisive in a tight contest, nudging them ahead of the chasing pack and earning them £18 each — a tidy return for a morning’s work.
Just missing out on top spot were Marcus Beale & Peter Milburn, also returning 37 points but edged out on countback with a back nine of 17. A fine performance nonetheless, and one that will no doubt be retold in the clubhouse with the phrase “if only” appearing at least twice.
Third place went to Richard Bursztyn & Steve D’Arcy, who posted a solid 36 points. Reliable, competitive, and just one good bounce away from climbing higher — the sort of round that keeps them firmly in the mix every week.
Rounding out the prizes were John Swain & John Hopwood, returning 35 points and winning the countback courtesy of a sharp back six of 12. A neat finish, and enough to secure £12 each and bragging rights for at least the next 48 hours.
1st R. Grewcock & S. Bryah 37 pts (B9 20) £18 each
2nd M. Beale & P. Milburn 37 pts (B9 17) £16 each

A well‑earned round of applause to Steve Wilson, who claimed top spot in Division 1 with an excellent 40 points. His card included two birdies and seven pars, the sort of steady, confident scoring that makes the rest of us wonder whether he’s finally cracked the secret of this game.
He finished two points clear of Dave Bonser, who returned a strong 38 points, winning the back‑nine countback with a tidy inward half of 18. A fine effort, and no doubt he’ll be replaying one or two “if only” moments in the clubhouse.
Just behind came Lance Rosie, also on 38 points, edged out on countback with a back nine of 17 — still an excellent performance and enough to keep the Division 1 leaderboard looking suitably competitive.
Graham Pretty completed the prize list with 36 points, a solid return and proof that consistency still pays the bills.
Over in Division 2, John Sallis took the honours with 36 points, helped along by two pars and a generally steady round that kept him just ahead of the chasing pack.
He finished one point ahead of James Shields, who posted 35 points with a back nine of 17 — a number he will almost certainly mention at least twice before leaving the car park.
Keith Evans also returned 35 points, but his back nine of 16 nudged him into third place. Kevin Giles followed closely with 34 points, rounding out a tightly bunched division where every putt seemed to matter.
1st Steve Wilson 40 pts £18
2nd Davie Bonser 38 pts (B9 18) £16
3rd Lance Rosie 38 pts (B9 17) £14
4th Graham Pretty 36 pts £12
1st John Sallis 36 pts £18
2nd James Shields 35 pts (B9 17) £16
3rd Keith Evans 35 pts (B9 16) £14
4th Kevin Giles 34 pts £12
Another enjoyable morning’s golf, full of tight finishes, good humour, and just enough “what might have been” to keep everyone coming back next week.

An excellent performance away from home saw the BFGC Seniors secure a 5–3 victory at Worksop Golf Club. The welcome was warm, the food superb, and the conditions… unusual. Preferred lies in July, on fairways baked straw‑coloured and rock‑hard, made for a curious morning of golf. But the team adapted brilliantly, showing real determination and fighting spirit — especially in the closing matches.
Phil Harrison and Mike Gilbert led the team out and delivered the perfect start with a confident 4&3 win over the Worksop pairing. Phil’s steady play and Mike’s reliable ball‑striking ensured Beeston took an early lead, settling the team and setting the tone for the day.
In Match 2, Drew Armstrong & Malcolm Leivers battled throughout and earned a valuable half point. The match was tight from the first tee to the last, with neither side able to pull clear. A solid result that kept Beeston in front at 1½–½.
Andy Lowe & Julian Ennis faced a strong Worksop pairing and slipped to a 5&4 defeat. The home side handled the firm greens and tricky lies particularly well, and despite determined efforts from Dave and Malcolm, Worksop levelled the overall score.
John Swan & Tim Hawkins produced another battling performance, finishing all square in Match 4. Their consistency over the closing holes secured a crucial half point, but with the next match going Worksop’s way, Beeston soon found themselves behind overall.
In Match 5, Marcus Beale & Bob Jones were defeated 5&3, giving Worksop a 3–2 lead after the first five matches. The home pair made full use of their local knowledge on the firm, fast greens, and despite some good play from Tony and Ray, the gap widened.
At this point, Beeston Fields trailed 3–2, and the pressure shifted firmly onto the final three pairings.
With the team needing a spark, Dave Bull and Pete Bull delivered a superb 1 UP win. Their match was tight throughout, but the Bulls showed real grit over the closing stretch, edging ahead on the final holes and dragging Beeston level at 3–3.
Next up, Dave Bishell and Ade Firth produced a composed and confident 2&1 victory. Ade used his shots cleverly, and Dave’s consistency kept the pressure on Worksop. Their win pushed Beeston into the lead for the first time since Match 1.
Finally, Bill Hurrell and Ray Stevenson sealed the overall victory with a strong 3&2 win. Bill’s accuracy and Ray’s short‑game touch proved decisive, completing a superb late surge from the Seniors and securing the fifth and final point.
A tremendous away performance, built on determination, resilience and a superb response from the final three pairings. When the going gets tough, the tough get going — and today the BFGC Seniors proved exactly that.
Thanks to all who played and represented the club with pride and fighting spirit.

The Seniors enjoyed a glorious day at Beeston Fields, with sunshine, fast fairways and temperatures climbing into the high 20s. The golf was equally bright, and by lunchtime the scoreboard showed a convincing 7–1 victory for Beeston Fields — one of the most dominant home performances of the season.
Phil Harrison and John Swan opened the scoring with a confident 4&3 win over Andy Bacon and Terry Malpass. Phil was steady throughout, while John continued to raise eyebrows by hitting the ball distances that no Senior Golfer should reasonably achieve. Reaching both the 16th and 17th in two shots was particularly suspicious. To maintain balance, he thoughtfully sprinkled in the occasional duffed iron to lull the opposition into a false sense of security.
The biggest win of the day came from Mike Gilbert and Bill Hurrell, who swept aside Pete Brealey and Dave Marshall with a superb 6&4 victory. Bill then added a flourish by winning the nearest‑the‑pin‑in‑two on the 18th, becoming the only Beeston player to do so and earning himself a well‑deserved bottle of wine. Rumour has it he guarded the bottle more closely than his putter.
Dave Bull and Malcolm Leivers produced a composed 2 UP win against Dave Allum and Richard Mayer. Malcolm used his shots wisely, while Dave’s steady play ensured Beeston always held the upper hand in a match that remained tight until the final holes.
Martin Bottomley and Tim Hawkins delivered another strong performance, securing a 2 UP victory over Steve Law and Andy Leask. Their consistency and calm approach over the closing stretch proved decisive as they closed out another valuable point.
Andy Lowe and Ade Firth combined well for a tidy 2&1 win against Jim O’Hare and Paedar Joyce. Ade’s shot allocation proved crucial, while Andy’s reliable tee‑to‑green play kept the pressure firmly on Mickleover throughout.
We shall, as instructed, not mention this match. (But for the sake of completeness — and only because the results sheet insists — Kev Murray and Bob Jones lost 4&3 to John Freeborough and Bob Badwal. And that is absolutely the last time this will be referenced.)
Tony Gilbert and Ray Stevenson produced a stylish 4&2 win over Mike Abbott and Paul Mason. Tony’s accuracy and Ray’s sharp short game made them a formidable pairing, securing Beeston’s sixth point of the day.
The final point came from John Hopwood and Rob McWilliam, who earned a confident 2&1 victory over Rob Woolley and Richard Cooper. Their composed approach ensured Beeston finished the match on a high.
Final Score: Beeston Fields 7 – 1 Mickleover
A dominant home performance in superb conditions, with strong golf across all matches and plenty of good humour. The Seniors Captain extends his thanks to all who played — and a gentle reminder to Mr Swan that the handicap committee is watching.
Another excellent day for the BFGC Seniors.
