Information relating to the Seniors Section at Beeston Fields Golf Club

A turnout of 41 players contested this year’s Jack Chettle Trophy, with 41 players taking to the course in pursuit of one of our most cherished Honours Board titles. The scoring was tight, the banter was lively, and the competition sheet looked as though it had survived a small storm of arithmetic by the time the last card was signed. The event produced a tight finish, with several players separated only by countback.

A small mystery surrounded the presentation this year— the trophy had mysteriously vanished, somewhere between the clubhouse and the committee cupboard. Whether it had wandered off, gone into hiding, or simply decided it deserved a sabbatical is unclear. But thanks to the magic of AI, the photo below now shows the moment exactly as it should have happened — winner Keith Evans being presented with the trophy by Seniors Captain Phil Harrison, silverware restored and dignity preserved.
A hearty congratulations (and perhaps a raised eyebrow) to Peter Milburn, who scooped the five‑pound card draw. Proof, once again, that you don’t need to trouble the leaderboard to walk away with the day’s most satisfying return.
All winnings will be credited to your bar card in due course.
With many of the regulars away representing the section in the match against Birstall, the second Seniors Medal of the season was a more intimate affair, with 22 players taking to the course. With numbers reduced, the field was combined into one division, but the competition remained as keen as ever.
It was Stu Newland who rose above the pack, returning an excellent nett 67 (73–6) to claim top spot and the £17 first prize. A tidy round, steady throughout, and fully deserving of the win.
In second place, Steve Wilson posted a solid nett 69 (81–12), earning £15 and keeping the pressure on the leader. Just behind him came Bill Litchfield, whose nett 72 (92–20) secured third place and £13.
Rounding out the prize winners was L.ance Rosie, carding a nett 73 (80–7) to take fourth place and £11.
The £5 card draw went to John Hopwood, who will no doubt claim it was all down to skill rather than luck.
Because so many players were away on match duty, an additional Medal No. 2B has been added to the fixture list for Tuesday 4th June, subject to availability—giving everyone a fair crack at the early‑season medals.
A smaller field, but still a competitive and enjoyable morning’s golf, with some excellent scoring at the top of the leaderboard.
All winnings will be credited to your bar card in due course.

The BFGC Seniors were on their travels again, this time to The Nottinghamshire’s Signature Course, where the thermometer hovered around 25°C and a steady breeze kept things just the right side of tropical. Even so, water bottles and sun‑cream were very much part of the essential kit list.
The course looked superb, and the welcome was as friendly as ever, but the home side proved strong across the board. Still, there were bright moments and excellent individual performances from the Beeston lads.
Beeston got off to the perfect start in Match 1, where Captain Phil Harrison and the ever‑dependable Andy Lowe combined beautifully to secure a 2 UP victory. A composed, controlled performance that briefly had the travelling supporters dreaming of an away upset.
In Match 3, Ade Firth and Malcolm Leivers delivered a gritty and well‑earned half point, navigating both the course and the conditions with trademark calmness.
The highlight of the morning came in Match 7, where John Swan and Kev Murray produced a superb 3&1 win. Their opponents included none other than Les Hutchinson, recently transferred from Beeston Fields for an undisclosed (but rumoured to be enormous) fee. The Beeston pair handled the occasion with icy composure, securing our second full point of the day.
Elsewhere, despite determined efforts, the remaining matches tilted the way of the home side. The Nottinghamshire pairing in Match 4 found form at exactly the wrong moment for us, and Matches 5, 6 and 8 also slipped away despite some spirited golf from the Beeston teams.
When the final cards were signed, the overall result stood at:
A tough away fixture, but played in excellent spirit and with several standout performances to take forward into the next match. As always, sincere thanks to all who represented Beeston Fields with honour, good humour, and distinction.

The Seniors made an excellent start at Kedleston Park, sweeping the opening four pairings to guarantee at least a draw before lunch had even settled. Dave Bull set the tone in Match 1, producing a standout performance as he and Phil Harrison secured a confident 2&1 win.
In Match 2, John Swan lit up the fairways with a pair of birdies, helping partner Rob McWilliam to another fine victory 3&2. This was followed by solid, composed wins from Drew Armstrong & Anil Patani 2&1, and Graham Pretty & Bill Hurrell 3&2, giving Beeston a commanding early lead.
Kedleston weren’t done, though. The home side rallied strongly, taking the next three matches and narrowing the gap to 4–3. That left Match 8 carrying the weight of the day — and what a finish it produced. Phil Mawson and Andy Lowe, four down at one stage, mounted a superb comeback to win 1 up on the last, sealing an excellent 5–3 away victory on a course in magnificent condition.
Many thanks to all who played.
And now for the important news:
Everybody paid for the meal this time.
No‑one was caught spying on the opposition’s practice rounds.
And finally — after some gentle encouragement from John Swan — Rich Gibney attempted to impress the Kedleston Captain by showing off his new tattoo. Please note: this is not expected to become standard Seniors‑Section behaviou
