Information relating to the Seniors Section at Beeston Fields Golf Club

A hearty round of applause (and possibly a small bow) to Steve C. Schofield, who marched to victory with a tidy nett 70. Steve went out in 40 and came back in 44, sprinkling in two birdies and five pars — the sort of form that makes the rest of us wonder whether he’s secretly been practising.
He finished three shots clear of Marcus Beale, who returned a nett 73 and a very respectable back nine of 37, which he will no doubt mention casually in the clubhouse for the next fortnight.
Drew Armstrong also posted a nett 73, but his back nine of 39 wasn’t quite enough to sneak past Marcus. Still, a fine effort and a reminder that Division 1 remains a dangerous place for the faint‑hearted.
Over in Division 2, Steve D’Arcy claimed the honours with a nett 72, going out in 43 and back in 49, including three pars and at least one moment where he wondered why he ever took up the game.
He edged out Terry Unwin by a single shot — Terry returning a nett 73 with a sharp back nine of 36, which suggests he either found his rhythm or finally located the middle of the clubface.
Peter Bull also carded a nett 73, but his back nine of 39 nudged him into third place. Rumours that he blamed the greens, the wind, and the alignment of Jupiter remain unconfirmed.
Below are the full results for both divisions:
1st Steve C. Schofield 70 £18
2nd Marcus Beale 73 (B9 37) £16
3rd Drew Armstrong 73 (B9 39) £14
1st Steve D’Arcy 72 £18
2nd Terry Unwin 73 (B9 36) £16
3rd Peter Bull 73 (B9 39) £14
30 players took part in the competition.
A warm welcome to new player Timothy Upston, who joins the Seniors ranks with enthusiasm, optimism, and absolutely no idea what he’s let himself in for.
All winnings will be credited to bar cards shortly — please spend them before the Treasurer changes his mind.
After a thorough financial review, several cups of tea, and one or two moments of staring blankly at the calculator hoping the numbers would magically improve, the Seniors Committee has agreed that the competition entry fee will be increasing to £3.50 per competition.
This bold and visionary move brings us in line with the Club competitions, keeps the Seniors Section solvent, and ensures we can continue to fund the important things in life — like prizes, bacon rolls, and the occasional replacement of the Captain’s blood pressure tablets.
We know change can be unsettling. Some of you may be thinking:
“£3.50? Outrageous! In my day you could buy a pint, a pie, and a new pair of socks for that.”
“Is this because the Treasurer has taken up an expensive new hobby?”
Rest assured:
The Treasurer has not taken up yachting.
And the extra 50p will help stretch our finances gracefully to the end of the season, rather than collapsing in a heap somewhere around December
Think of it this way: it’s still cheaper than a bucket of range balls, and far less painful than the three‑putt you’ll inevitably have on the 7th.
Thank you for your understanding, your good humour, and your continued support of the Seniors Section — a legendary squad of finely‑tuned sportsmen, world‑class storytellers, and proud holders of more hospital loyalty cards than golfing trophies.

The Seniors travelled to Longcliffe Golf Club for what proved to be a highly competitive and entertaining match on a course renowned for its slopes, borrows and the occasional optical illusion. The weather was kind, the welcome warm, and the golf—at times—excellent from both sides.
Longcliffe’s home advantage, particularly their familiarity with the subtleties both on and around the greens, ultimately proved decisive. But Beeston Fields produced several standout performances and kept the match alive right to the final pairings.
The biggest win of the day came courtesy of Ade Firth and Ray Stevenson, who stormed to a superb 6&4 victory in Match 6. A dominant display from tee to green, and a well‑earned point for Beeston Fields.
Ironically, the same scoreline appeared in Match 5—but unfortunately in the opposite direction—as Richard Bursztyn and Rich Gibney found themselves on the wrong end of a 6&4 result. Golf, as ever, remains a game of balance.
In Match 2, Lance Rosie and Malcolm Leivers delivered an excellent 4&3 win, both using their shots wisely and keeping the Longcliffe pair under pressure throughout.
The same scoreline appeared again in Match 3, where Anil Patani and John Hopwood secured another impressive 4&3 victory. Special congratulations go to Anil for holing out from a bunker—though, in the interests of team harmony, we shall tactfully gloss over the fact that it was his second shot from that very same bunker.
Elsewhere, Captain Phil Harrison battled hard in Match 1 before going down 2&1, while Andy Beer and Bob Jones fought gamely in Match 7 but were edged out 4&2. The final match saw John Swan and Kev Murray narrowly defeated 1 down in a tight contest that could easily have swung the other way.
A competitive match played in great spirit on a superb course. Although Longcliffe’s local knowledge ultimately tipped the balance, there were plenty of positives for Beeston Fields, including three excellent wins and several strong individual performances.
Another enjoyable day out for the Seniors, and sincere thanks to all who represented the club with commitment, humour and distinction.

The BFGC Seniors were on their travels again, this time to The Nottinghamshire’s Signature Course, where the thermometer hovered around 25°C and a steady breeze kept things just the right side of tropical. Even so, water bottles and sun‑cream were very much part of the essential kit list.
The course looked superb, and the welcome was as friendly as ever, but the home side proved strong across the board. Still, there were bright moments and excellent individual performances from the Beeston lads.
Beeston got off to the perfect start in Match 1, where Captain Phil Harrison and the ever‑dependable Andy Lowe combined beautifully to secure a 2 UP victory. A composed, controlled performance that briefly had the travelling supporters dreaming of an away upset.
In Match 3, Ade Firth and Malcolm Leivers delivered a gritty and well‑earned half point, navigating both the course and the conditions with trademark calmness.
The highlight of the morning came in Match 7, where John Swan and Kev Murray produced a superb 3&1 win. Their opponents included none other than Les Hutchinson, recently transferred from Beeston Fields for an undisclosed (but rumoured to be enormous) fee. The Beeston pair handled the occasion with icy composure, securing our second full point of the day.
Elsewhere, despite determined efforts, the remaining matches tilted the way of the home side. The Nottinghamshire pairing in Match 4 found form at exactly the wrong moment for us, and Matches 5, 6 and 8 also slipped away despite some spirited golf from the Beeston teams.
When the final cards were signed, the overall result stood at:
A tough away fixture, but played in excellent spirit and with several standout performances to take forward into the next match. As always, sincere thanks to all who represented Beeston Fields with honour, good humour, and distinction.
